We are a mid-size, full-service law firm capable of handling matters from the routine to the highly complex. We are the client’s first call for trusted legal advice.

How We Do It

We establish long-term relationships and deliver high-quality, results-oriented work consistently and efficiently. Our organizational values guide all of our actions. If we are not the right firm to handle a matter, we assist our clients to identify, retain and manage specialty counsel.

Our 90+ Year History

A Francis Porta
A. Francis Porta
(1905-1983)

A. Francis Porta began practicing law in Oklahoma in the 1930’s. He held various public offices including county attorney and state representative and was a sole practitioner until 1949 when he entered partnership with Joseph P. Weaver. Mr. Porta’s son-in-law, James C. Bass, joined the firm in 1966. Mr. Bass’ younger brother, John A. “Andy” Bass, joined the firm in 1975, prompting the firm to change its name to Porta, Bass and Bass, P.C. Mr. Porta remained active in the practice of law until his death in 1983. The name of the firm was changed to Bass Law in 1994.

The First Office Opens
1934

The firm’s first office was opened in downtown El Reno in 1934 above the old Otasco store before being moved to the First National Bank Building until 1966. From 1966 to 1975 the firm occupied the Professional Building (a/k/a the Liebmann Ice Company Building). The firm’s El Reno office has been located at 104 N. Rock Island since 1975 after the building was renovated and converted from a furniture store into an office building.

James C. Bass
(1938– 2015)

James C. Bass began the practice of law in 1966 and practiced law for nearly 50 years until his death in 2015. He was a well-respected lawyer and served in various bar leadership positions, including as a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association (OBA) Board of Governors from 1978-1980 and again from 1993-1995, culminating in his election to the position of OBA vice-president in 1996. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Bass was regularly listed in Oklahoma Super Lawyers and Best Lawyer in America, being recognized by that organization as the Oklahoma City area Trust and Estate Lawyer of the Year in 2014. He was also active in his community, serving on the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Board of Directors, Oklahoma City University Board of Trustees, and the El Reno City Council. Mr. Bass held a commission in the United States Army from 1960-1962.

John A. "Andy" Bass
Andy Bass

Andy Bass practices primarily in trusts and estates, probate, real estate, oil and gas, business, and tax law. Until 2008, he guided Bass Law through a period of steady growth, providing leadership and careful stewardship of the firm and its clients. Andy holds Martindale-Hubbell’s AV Preeminent™ rating and has been recognized in Oklahoma Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and an El Reno Distinguished Alumni. Andy has also served in the Oklahoma Legislature, on the CompSource Oklahoma Board, the El Reno School Board, and the El Reno Chamber of Commerce Board.

A. Gabriel Bass
A. Gabriel Bass

Gabe Bass served as managing partner of Bass Law from 2008 to 2024, leading the firm through a period of continued growth and establishing its permanent Oklahoma City office. He practices in business law, real estate, oil and gas, and trusts and estates. Gabe holds Martindale-Hubbell’s AV Preeminent™ rating and has been recognized in Oklahoma Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America. He served on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and continues to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve with the rank of colonel. Gabe is a graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the U.S. Air Force Air War College and has received numerous military honors. He has also served on the Oklahoma Bar Foundation Board of Trustees.

A New Generation of Leadership

In 2024, Bass Law transitioned to a new generation of leadership with partners Jana Knott, Chance Deaton, and Kristy Loyall. This team continues the firm’s longstanding commitment to excellence, client service, and community involvement. Together, the new partners are building on the firm’s legacy while guiding Bass Law into its next chapter of growth and service.

Merger & Acquisition of Schulte, Schneiter, and Gibson
2026

Bass Law acquired and merged with Schulte, Schneiter, and Gibson, a long-standing law firm on Main Street in Kingfisher. This merger reflected our shared commitment to serving Kingfisher County and surrounding communities with trusted, high-quality legal services.
